In the wake of the devastation left behind by the California state wildfires earlier this year, many are beginning to rebuild their homes. Now more than ever, homeowners are looking to build homes that are fire-resistant. What can you do to build a fire-resistant home and increase your peace of mind?
Build with Non-Combustible Materials
The first step in building fire-resistant homes is choosing non-combustible building materials. Concrete and brick are excellent choices for the base. Installing metal roofing, siding and decks is also a proactive measure to protect your home. Fire rated windows and doors provide an additional layer of protection.
Home hardening techniques
Complete rebuilds are not always an option. Additionally, it is not always possible to completely avoid the use of all combustible materials. In these cases, home hardening methods are available. For example:
● Vents:
Ember-resistant vents help block embers from entering attics and crawl spaces. A number of these vents have been approved by the State of California and the State Fire Marshal’s Office. For more information see Chapter 7A of the California Building Code.
● Windows:
Fires can cause glass to crack, break or even melt, allowing embers and flames to enter the home or building. In order to provide an additional layer of protection, choose double-pane windows with at least one layer of tempered glass. Installing smaller windows with metal framing is another suggestion.
● Gutters:
Installing metal gutters along with gutter guards or cover is also recommended. Even with the use of gutter guards, debris and vegetation can accumulate. Therefore, regular cleaning and maintenance of gutters is crucial.
● Fire-resistant caulking:
Fire-resistant sealant or caulking prevents the spread of fire or smoke by sealing different points in a building. Intumescent, silicone, and acrylic fire caulks are available, each with their unique applications. These can be applied around openings for electrical wiring, plumbing, or HVAC ducts, around door and window frames, and around fireplaces and chimneys.
● GreenFire® Pro Defense:
GreenFire® Pro Defense is a transparent fire retardant that can be applied to cellulose-based products. It can be used on installation, wood beams, and other interior surfaces. It can also be used on brush, fencing, outdoor furniture and more. Read more about the properties, benefits and many uses of this product.
Additional Suggestions For A Fire-Resistant Home
Keep yard and surrounding area clear by:
- Removing combustible furniture from the perimeter of your home
- Keeping your property clear of underbrush, dead leaves, and other combustible materials
- Adding a perimeter of crushed stone or cement around your home to act as a firewall
Another valuable resource for homeowners is NFPA’s Firewise program. This program divides the area around the home into three sections called home ignition zones. This method was developed by retired USDA Forest Service fire scientist Jack Cohen in the late 1990s in order to prepare homes to withstand ember attacks and minimize the likelihood of flames or surface fire touching the home or any attachments. Following these suggestions can greatly increase the safety of your home.
